Slaven Tolj
CRAQUELURE, PAVO AND I
Otok Gallery / Art Workshop Lazareti
18.10. – 8.11.2024
After the eponymous but distinct exhibitions in Split (MKC Gallery), Bologna (Palazzo d’Accursio), Rijeka (OK Gallery), and Zagreb (Institute for Contemporary Art), Slaven Tolj, after a long time, is now staging a solo exhibition in his own space and on his own ground – at the Otok Gallery / Art Workshop Lazareti.
Each of the aforementioned exhibitions was different from the others, showcasing both new and old works by Slaven Tolj, yet they built upon one another, forming an associative and interconnected sequence. In a text about Slaven Tolj’s exhibition, Helena Puhara writes: “Today, when he exhibits his earlier works or their segments, Tolj does not approach them retrospectively but associatively. They are carefully chosen because they are directly linked to certain situations, phenomena, ideas, and predictions that currently obsess or occupy the artist.” Judging by the works, the artist seems to transpose his personal and complex poetics into an underground world. “Whether it’s about people who are on his mind, things resurrected through archaeological methods, life circumstances, or situations, one will notice that death, exhaustion, decay — all that has been brought to an end — are in a permanent associative connection with his everyday life.”
The exhibition is one of the activities marking 35 years of ARL, which will continue until the end of 2024.
