“In his works, Hans Kotter makes it possible to experience the fascination, potential, atmosphere and complexity of light. He uses light – in combination with reflective and light-conducting materials – as a powerful energy that appeals to perception and imagination and opens up access to other realities in the indeterminate ‘non-space’.” This was the justification for the German Light Art Prize 2024, which was awarded to Hans Kotter by the Robert Simon Art Foundation in January. The internationally renowned artist’s fantastic works of light art can now be seen in the art museum.
Kotter shoots arrows of light through the room and creates virtual spaces extended into infinity by mirrors with geometric light patterns that change color.
One of his works – triple tube, 2012/2013 – is already a familiar sight in Celle: It stands in a former store at the light art station and glows mysteriously through a window at the side exit of the building at night. Hans Kotter studied art and design in New York and Munich. He has received numerous awards and scholarships. From 2007-2013 he taught at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart.
